Good question! People use "vinyl" and "LVT" like they mean the same thing, but there's actually a bit more to it.
Vinyl is the family name — it covers pretty much everything in this category. The classic version is sheet vinyl: one continuous roll that gets fitted wall to wall, no joins. Brilliant for bathrooms and smaller rooms, and easy on the budget too.
LVT (that's Luxury Vinyl Tile, in case you were wondering) is the posh cousin. Instead of one big sheet, it comes in individual planks or tiles - a bit like a jigsaw. Because it's built up in layers, it looks incredibly realistic (we're talking proper wood grain, real stone texture) and it's built to handle whatever life throws at it.
So here's the easy way to remember it: all LVT is vinyl, but not all vinyl is LVT.

Floors rarely wear out because of age. They wear out because of spills, dirt, damp, claws and constant cleaning. Vinyl and LVT are designed to cope with exactly those things, which is why they keep their looks when other floors start to show their age.
Easier to Clean, So It Stays Looking New
The surface is sealed, so dirt and spills sit on top instead of soaking in. A sweep and a damp mop is all it needs. Floors that are hard to clean get cleaned less well, and that is what wears them out. Carpet holds dirt deep in the fibres, and bare wood needs more careful cleaning to avoid damage.
Better With Water Than Laminate
Laminate has a wood-fibre core that can swell and lift if water gets in at the joints. Vinyl and LVT are water-resistant, so a spill, a wet dog or a leaking washing machine is far less likely to ruin the floor. That is why they suit kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms where laminate struggles.
Tough on Scuffs, Pets and Furniture
The protective wear layer takes the scratches and scuffs of daily life, and vinyl has a little give underfoot that helps it cope with dropped items and moved furniture. Real wood can dent and scratch, and carpet pulls and flattens in busy areas such as hallways and stairs.
No Refinishing, No Replacing
Real wood needs sanding and re-sealing over the years, and carpet often needs replacing when it wears or stains. Vinyl and LVT need neither. You clean it and you carry on. Less upkeep means lower running costs over the life of the floor.
